GOP Budget Bill has Devastating Implications for Woodbury County

UPDATE: The resolution referenced below has passed but the math still needs to be add up. Continue contacting Randy Feenstra's office for information on what cuts will be made and how that equates to standing up for District Four Iowans.

Over the past weekend, Americans learned some details about the GOP budget bill making its way through the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill:

  • Increases the national debt by nearly $4 trillion.
  • Gives major tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations.
  • Increases middle class tax burden.
  • Defunds projects to reimburse farmers for expenses they have already incurred to farm sustainably.
  • Drastically cuts funding to Medicaid, which covers 620,000 Iowans and helps fund rural providers, hospitals and nursing homes.

“If the GOP had set out to design a bill to devastate Woodbury County, this is exactly what it would look like," said Woodbury County Democratic Communications Chair Ryan Akerberg. "For all their talk about cost-cutting, Republicans are proposing a stunning $4 trillion increase in debt. For all their warnings about how the ‘elites’ are out to get voters, this bill explicitly sets out to lavishly reward their rich donors on the backs of those very voters.

"The bill is slated for a vote on Tuesday night," Akerberg continued. "The scheduling isn’t accidental—knowing how it will harm constituents, Republican legislators want to cast their votes under the radar. The only thing that will stop them is an emphatic ‘NO’  from their constituents."

If constituents are as alarmed about this bill as we are, they must let legislators know it. We urge Woodbury County constituents of all political stripes to contact Representative Randy Feenstra to vote against the bill by calling (712) 224-4692 or visiting his office at 320 6th Street in Sioux City.
