After a year of avoiding the question – or at least the answer – candidate for Woodbury County Auditor, Recorder, and Commissioner of Elections Michelle Skaff seems to agree that Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential election.
Multiple inquiries to candidate Skaff’s FaceBook page as to who won the last presidential election were consistently met with non-answers and vague platitudes about election security. Yes, Michelle, there needs to be election security – see Pat Gill’s response to Supervisor Jeremy Taylor and wife’s attempts to stuff the ballot box.
Beyond election security, the job of Woodbury County Auditor also requires the moral fortitude to perservere when there’s no support from the County Board of Supervisors or the Iowa Secretary of State for the work necessary to uncover election fraud. The job of Auditor requires the deeply held desire to support voter access by mailing voting requests and installing safe secure ballot boxes that ensure chain-of-command. The job of Woodbury County Auditor requires the steadfast honesty to be able to look foes and friends in the eye and say the truth.
At last night’s League of Women Voters & Siouxland GO Candidates Forum, the candidates’ answers to the question“Who won the 2020 Presidential election?” spoke volumes. Auditor Pat Gill unequivocably stated that Joe Biden won the election. Candidate Michelle Skaff gave a quiet “I agree” as her response to the question she’s avoided all this election season.
Woodbury County residents deserve an Auditor who is not afraid of facts. Who is able to impartially administer elections with a focus on ensuring every legal vote is able to be cast, then counted correctly. We deserve an Auditor who will state who won an election without wishing the results away, if the facts are inconvenient to one’s base. Fear of antagonizing one’s supporters is not a rationale to run from the truth.
With less than one month before this Presidential election, we’re glad Michelle Skaff came to the reluctant conclusion that Joe Biden won the last one. But we wonder what took her so long.
