WCDP Partners with Sweetgrass Uprising and Siouxland’s Good Trouble Makers to Help Feed Neighbors
WCDP has joined forces with Streetgrass Uprising and Siouxland’s Good Trouble Makers to help feed Siouxlanders experiencing food insecurity due to the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The benefits will pause beginning Saturday, November 1, 2025, at which point the federal government will have been shut down for more than a month. This suspension of benefits will leave 42 million Americans and more than 12,000 Woodbury County residents without the benefits on which they depend to feed their families.
“The GOP’s message to Americans is essentially, ‘Until Democrats agree to let us take away your healthcare, you’ll have to go hungry,’” said WCDP Chair Ryan Akerberg. “The GOP tries to paint the working poor as lazy, but they know full well that most SNAP recipients work full-time; it’s just that their low wages place them below the poverty line. Most recipients who don’t work full-time are disabled or caretakers. It’s really difficult to understand the GOP’s position on this issue—to Democrats, it’s a no-brainer that the richest country in the history of the world should not have a hunger problem.”
The Food Bank of Siouxland is very good at what they do, so the role that the three partnering organizations will play is in support of their work. Sweetgrass Uprising and Siouxland’s Good Trouble Makers have arranged for local spots to act as food and donation collection and distribution sites during extended hours through November, including:
- Mondays, 5:00 to 7:00 pm: New Life in Christ Church, 2929 W 4th Street, Sioux City
- Tuesdays, 5:00 to 7:00 pm: First Congregational United Church of Christ, 4600 Hamilton Blvd., Sioux City
- Saturdays, 1:00 to 3:00 pm: Lobby of the Frances Building, 505 5th Street, Sioux City
How You Can Help
We are asking Woodbury Democrats to do the following:
- Donate to the Food Bank. Your money goes further toward the purchase of food when you donate to the Food Bank due to their bulk purchase agreements with their partners. You may also bring cash to the collection spots listed above at the designated times.
- Volunteer to work a shift or two at the collection/distribution sites detailed above. There, we will also be registering voters and distributing handouts inviting visitors to join our movement. To make these arrangements, contact Jess Lopez-Walker with Sweetgrass Uprising at (712) 204-7765. Contact Kim Mathers at (712) 251-0282 for handouts.
