Good News: We Have a New Chair

Woodbury County Democrats are fortunate that Tim Bottaro is willing to step up and take over as chair, following the resignation of Al Sturgeon. Tim previously served as chair for 4 years in the 1990’s and represented us very well.

In the Saturday, February 5 Sioux City Journal, there was an article about Bottaro becoming the new chair, and that article had many errors and inaccuracies. For example, the Journal stated that Sturgeon “assumed an uncompleted term vacated by Rick Mullin.” That, of course is completely false: Mullin served as vice-chair for 4 years, and then served as chair for 4 years; he did not vacate his position.

Sturgeon was apparently misquoted as saying “when I took over the party it was in pretty sad shape. They were broke…” That is also false. In the late 1990’s when Mullin served as chair, (a period when President Clinton was impeached and attacked daily,) our local Democratic Party thrived. We had money in the treasury and had most central committee positions filled with active members. We ran vigorous campaigns in almost every race across Woodbury County, electing and re-electing Democrats to State and County offices.

Sturgeon, on the other hand, had the great good fortune to be chair when there was a huge national wave of activism and Democrats raised record funds all across the country.

What is wrong with Sturgeon? He slinks away from the county chair job, and attacks the previous chair -- a guy who did a great job. Somehow i feel sorry for Al. Something's not right there.

Sturgeon is a great rabblerouser but was a lousy chair. He was ok for the first year or so - had some good ideas. Then went downhill fast. Guess he was busy with other things.
